Zusammenfassung What will you remember about this material? How did it help you better understand die Wende? What themes came up in the book that you have also heard about in class?

I learned a lot reading Olli aus Ossiland. Reading the book gave me a glimpse of what die Wende was like for someone my age. Also, reading the book in class brought up many discussions on what it was like in real life. I will especially remember the bit about when Olli came to the West and how he had such a hard time fitting in. While you think every person from East Germany would love living in the West, Olli, and I'm sure many others, felt the most comfortable back in East Germany. Also, I found the part about the refugees very interesting and how they were persecuted by many. The book helped me to better understand the changes the end of communism brought about, not just for East Germany as a whole, but how it effected the people individually. Many of the in class discussions stemmed from reading the novel, except most discussions on the Stassi. Many of the book's themes revolved around the changes in local towns, such as abandonment of Communist officials, factories and businesses shutting down, local shops going out of business because of the influence of Western economy, and plights of refugees. Overall the story of Olli was not that interesting, but the time and place it was written about gave the book an educational setting.

Kapitel 13- Das Ende

Zehn Jahre später..

Olli und sein Familie wohnen im Hohenroda. Er heiratete Marlies vor sechs Jahren und hat jetzt drei Kinder. Der älteste Sohn ist David, seine Tochter ist Kim, und der jüngste Sohn ist David. Er ist sehr glücklich mit Marlies, und sieht Sabine in einer langen Zeit nicht. Er ist der Direktor für sein "Hotel Hohenroda". Die Hotel hat langsam begonnen und würde nicht so viel Leute geblieben. Die Popularität des Hotel wuchs und jetzt es ist sehr geschäftig. Viele Leute aus Berlin und Dresden bleiben im seinem Hotel. Auch, viele Leute aus Hohenroda arbeitet im Hotel. Und Olli lebten glücklich und zufrieden.

Ich würde ein Artz werden. Auch ich würde einen netten, christlichen Mann heiratet und hätte vier Kinder. Wenn ich ein Artzt wäre, dann würde ich viel Geld machen. Ich hätte ein Zimmer für meiner Tonwaren und Brennofen. Ich würde viel Reisen mit meine Familier machen. Ich hätte ein gutes, langes Leben leben.

Kapitel 9

Ich mag ein Supermarkt kaufen. Der Supermarkt hat alles. Aber meine Mutti kauft auf dem Markt manchmal. Die KKK ist eine Gruppe dass ist ausländerfeindliche. Sie verfolgen die Afro-Amerikaner und jetzt sie ist keine große Gruppe.

Das Leben der Anderen

1. The Stasi starts by suspecting someone taking part in anti-communist acts. Whether it be what he or she says, writes, or acts. The Stasi then bugs the suspect's home and continually follows stalks their home. After awhile, if they lack sufficient evidence, the case is closed, but most of the time they find the suspect to have acted in an anti-communist way. They then bring the person in for intense interrogation. The Stasi will interrogate for long periods and they know that if a person cries then they are guilty, but if a person was innocent they became angry. The movie opens with a scene of Herr Wiesler interrogating a man until he finally cracks some information about his neighbors anti-communist acts. The movie proceeds to show Wiesler's bugging and stalking of suspect Herr Dreyman. 


2. If one is found guilty of being an anti-communist, then they are usually put in prison. For many of the artists, the Stasi threatened to black-list them if they produced anything unsupportive of the communist party. Once put on the black-list, the artist can not survive on their work because no one will buy or produce it. 


3. Herr Wiesler worked and reported to Anton Grubitz. While Herr Grubitz reported to those in higher authority. 


4. Herr Wiesler is a man dedicated to his work as a member of the Stasi. However, as he starts to investigate Herr Dreyman's case, his views begin to chance. He begins to realize the corruption of the Communist party and how unjust his work really is. He ultimately helps Dreyman escape from being ruined and loses his job in the process. This shows a man with strong morals and someone willing to withstand conforming to society. 


5. At his birthday party, Dreyman is given the sheet music for " Sonata fur einen guten Menschen" from his friend Jerska. Jerska then proceeds to hang himself a little while later. As Dreyman is playing the sonata on his piano, Wiesler listens through the bugging system and is emotionally moved. "Sonata fur einen guten Menschen" translates into English as "a sonata about a good man", and was written by Gabriel Yared. 6.I would describe Christa Maria Sieland as a very self-centered character. Through her relationship with Minister Kumpf, one sees that she is willing to do anything to ensure her career as an actor, even it means being unfaithful to Dreyman. Also, when she gets picked up by the Stasi, she reveals the Dreyman had written the paper and where he kept his secret typewriter. She is willing to use anyone, even those she cares about most, to save her career. Also, she is a drug addict and buys pills illegally. 


7. The relationship between Christa Maria and Georg is very interesting. They live together, but are not married, and have no intention to be. Georg stars Christa Maria in many of the plays he writes. They seem very get along very well and I would say they do love each other. Georg knows of Christa Maria's infidelity and still does not leave her. He needs her for companionship and support, while she uses him for her career.

Kapitel 5

Olli gefällt der Westen nicht. Er hat keine Freunde und die Leute machen sich über ihm lustig. Also, Olli gefällt die Arbeit nicht weil er arbeitet im Ratskeller und muss dem Berufschule gehen. Ollis Chef, Herr Wamshüter sprach immer laut und sagt dass Olli ein langsam Ossi ist. Olli hat ein kleines Zimmer unterm Dach in dem Haus Herr und Frau Wamshüter wohnen. Er hat keine Freizeit und kann Sabine nicht sehen. Er hat kein Geld für die neue West Kleidung.

Kapitel 4

Viele Sachen veränderungen in Hohenroda nach die Mauer aufgemacht.
1. Alle Häuser haben den gleichen braunen Putz.
2.Die Glasfabrik geschlossen aber die Glas war zu teuer und nicht gut genug.
3. Es gibt verlassen russischen Kasernen. Ollis Vater arbeitet jetzt hier.
4.Die Leute auf Hohenroda nehmen Sachen auf die russischen Kasernen.
5. Ollis Mutter verkauft Essen in ein Laden bei ihr Haus.

Kapitel 3

One example of the paradox is when Olli's father addresses everyone "Genossen und Genossinnen". This is the German word for Commrad, a name used for fellow Communist members. The irony in his address is the wall has come down, therefore, communism in German ceases to exist. Also, Olli's father was not a die-hard member of the communist part.

Kapitel 2

1. "Mit dem Auto von meinem Bruder."
Maik hat den Trabi von seinem Bruder genommen. Er ist in der Nacht nach Berlin gefahren.
2. "Maik konnte ganz gut fahren, aber er war erst 16, er hatte keinen Fuhrerschein, es waren uber 300 Kilometer nach Berlin, es war Nacht, und hatte zu viel Sekt getrunken."
Olli findet Maik's Idee schlecht aber Maik hat keinen Führerschein und er war beschwipst.
3."Sabines Vater war ein ziemlich hohes Tier in der Partei gewesen...und von einer dieser Reisen war er nicht zuruckgekehrt. Er war im Westen geblieben."
Sabine will nach Berlin fahren aber sie sucht nach ihren Vater.

Kapitel 1

"Was denn, habt ihr es night gehört? Es kam gerade im Radio. In Berlin haben sie die Mauer aufgemacht!"

In diesem Zitate sagte Maik die Leute und Olli, dass die Mauer in Berlin zerstören haben. Maik hört auf dem Radio und hat viel Aufregung. Ich denke dieses Zitate ist bedeutend aber es war ein historische Tag für alle in Deutschland. Dieser Fall war sehr gross und brachte viel Veränderung.
